A riverbed with no river in it, two markets and a night out at the beach end. One day, done properly.
4 places
One of the largest fresh markets in Europe, under stained glass and iron. Go at nine, walk the fish and the tinned-goods aisles, have a beer and an esgarraet at Central Bar in the middle.
Plaça de la Ciutat de Bruges
They moved the river after the 1957 flood and made nine kilometres of park in the empty bed. Walk it east from the old bridges — this is the single best thing about living here.
The old riverbed
An old ice factory by the beach, now a bar with concerts, markets and no polish whatsoever. The Cabanyal at its best. Check what is on and go on that night.
Carrer dels Pescadors, Cabanyal
A Carmen institution: flamenco on Tuesdays, records the rest of the week, and it does not really start until midnight. Free most nights.
Carrer de Santa Teresa 19
